BBFN: My Sub (WAR) Runs Out
So in what should have been a grand sendoff with a tour of Lost Fail (Vale) I’ve actually ended up with a no-show in the group (curse you Zygorian, consider yourself named and shamed you grubby dwarf) and the end of my WAR subscription happening after days of doing nothing but a single WBT wing on my Witch Hunter.
This won’t stop me from following things, or from blogging about WAR. I will, of course, be slowing down on posts because it’ll be more challenging to keep up while on vacation for the next three weeks. But I’ll still be making posts about whatever, including WAR.
Will I resub? Depends on how things look in three weeks. 1.2 wasn’t the miracle patch. Oddly enough it buffed every class I play that is over level 20. But I don’t LIKE being buffed. I like being balanced. :) (Even better I like playing something considered gimp and still owning face.)

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes . . . tons of potential don't amount to a hill of beans when you fail to realize it quickly enough.
There are a LOT of posts out there about how people are pretty disgruntled right now. (Yes, that *was* four links in a single sentence . . .) Destruction crying about AOE and Warrior Priests (while both sides have AoE and it’s not like Cleansing Power instantly resurrects all fallen allies within 500 feet at full health), while pre 1.2 Order just had to “learn to play” . . . not so funny now that balance has swung the other direction?
The best part is people who claim that the balance is worse now than when the game was released. That’s really quite the load of crap. The fact that Destruction had more advantages for the first six months is what’s causing this misconception to happen. Not the fact that the balance is actually worse than it was, because it isn’t. I’ve mentioned it before (somewhere, maybe here) and I’ll do so again: the balance of the classes is closer now than it has ever been in the past.
Sure there are some issues. Rain of Fire and Pit of Shades need stacking restrictions for one thing. Cleansing Power needs to be tweaked downwards in effectiveness, though there are plenty of ways to do that. A load of the AoE skills that various classes have need to be changed to make them less powerful. When AoE approaches single target damage (or healing) something has gone wrong.
WAR could have been better than it is. WAR could become better than it is. Hopefully WAR will be better than it is.
But if it’s not, there are a lot of other games for people to play. And they will . . .

On my server, Order was always more powerful than Destruction, ever since launch. At least in the area where I can more easily define “power”: scenarios. I haven’t kept a tally of wins versus losses, but the ratio feels very much like 1:2, with Order owning us twice as often as the other way around.
It looked like Destro had an advantage in open RvR early on, but for the past two months or so Order has really caught up.
Destruction had us on the ropes for a long time on Karak-Hirn. We pushed back a few times, but they did really own us the majority of the time until 1.1. At that point it became more even and we even managed to get to IC once. 1.2 came and we were forced to transfer. The balance of power favors Order now. A lot of it has to do with apathy. Some to do with mechanics.
It is hard to go from having a lot of advantages to being at a disadvantage. It’s hard to go from a numeric advantage to equality, and suffer from increased apathy and dissatisfaction.
I find it so hard to figure out just how balanced the game is now versus when I first started playing last Fall.
Back then I was a noob and didn’t understand all the game mechanics, and I only had two characters (a Chosen and a Witch Hunter). Now that I understand what I’m doing (and what’s happening, thanks to a few key UI mods) and have my 2 mains plus 17 other alts, I feel like it’s impossible for me to look back and compare my early experience with WAR to my current experiences.
All I do know is that I hear a lot bad things about lv40 and T4; there’s a lot less optimism out there than there was at launch. Can’t say that encourages me to work hard at leveling up my mains…
To be honest I would just enjoy playing WAR right now the way you have enjoyed it. There’s content at 40 that *is* pretty fun, but there is also a lot to be said for playing at sub-40 levels. I have had a lot of fun with alts, and though I love my main (and 40 alt) I find them more of a bore than I find my alts.
In time we can hope (heck, we can even assume and be pretty safe) that WAR will become more balanced, more polished, and given a renewed focus on RvR that is a) meaningful and b) fun. As it stands I don’t enjoy the end-game very much. I’m not alone in this regard.
I am thinking 1.3 in June will bring with it at the very least some more content to be enjoyed. How much of a revamp the current (broken) content gets at that time may determine a lot of things about how WAR proceeds.
